I have written this with Sean Ohmann and Sean Kingsley. About homeless animals. We made a action plan for what we would like to complete (step by step.) CLICK HERE for action plan. Homeless animals, a topic that is less discussed and, a problem we need to solve. Homeless animals live on the streets, where there is trash and we give them no respect. Animals are abandoned, neglected, abused, hungry, or put to death in shelters. If you have a pet you understand how much they mean to you, but if you didn’t adopt that pet then they could be the pet you drive by sitting on the curb with no home to go to. We would like to volunteer at a non-kill animal shelter to not only raise awareness of the issue but also to help out and show our support. We are very interested in this topic. We all have owned or own a pet. We love them unconditionally. We don’t want any animals out on the street and we want them to have a home to go to. We think that they deserve a loving home like we give our pets at home. We very much would like to get rid of animal homelessness all together. Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. If we could lower that number we think that would be worth the time we put into it. Everyone everywhere, no matter if they have a pet, should care about animals and how they and others can help them. We should treat animals with the same respect we give each other. For some and most consider their pet part of their family. It could have been your animal that was homeless. You and everyone you know should care about animal homelessness and the issue it presents to all of us around the the world. Right now, approximately 28,235 animals are homeless and when and if they are put in a shelter 36% will most likely be euthanized. We would like to volunteer at an animal shelter to make it apparent that we care and we want to increase the adoption of pets so that less are homeless and less are euthanized. This issue has affected our community for years. Many animals that live on the streets never find a home.Of the 6.5 million animals are turned into shelters, only 3.2 million are adopted. That means 3.3 million animals that are turned into shelters are not adopted. We believe that this should not be. One way to solve this would be to stop buying animals from breeders and to take in strays. And the best place to get strays is from animal shelter. Animal shelters need help though. Most are understaffed and have to rely on volunteers in order to care for the animals. There are currently more than 5000 animal shelters nationwide. There is no national or international organization for keeping track of these shelters. And as such only a few get funding from the government. If this issue is not taken care of, disaster could occur. Animal shelters help keep animals safe. They also keep the population of animals down to safe levels. If they got out of control, they could lead to competition between dogs for food, leading to the deaths of many dogs. It could also cause an increase in the spread of animal-borne diseases. These could be devastating for the humans, as well as the animals. An organization that is helping with homeless animals is a group called ASPCA. ASPCA(2017) is collecting money to help build shelters for the homeless animals and give them the chance to have families. There is still a need to help homeless animals because it is cruel to do things like abuse and starve animals. It is also very painful for some people to see animals like that. There are many different ways people are helping homeless animals some people are adopting them from animal shelters some are having fundraisers and some people are taking the animals home right off the street. Adopting animals from homeless shelters is one of the most common or popular ways people get animals. It is a good thing to adopt the animals from there because you know that they were being taken care of. You can also look at reviews of that specific shelter and check if you are not sure about adopting from that shelter. Another common way to help the homeless animals is to have a fundraiser. People have fundraisers to help out homeless animal shelters the shelters take the money and use it to buy things like food and other necessities. The last way that people really help homeless animals is adopting or taking them right off the streets. This is a good thing that you are trying to help homeless animals but can be a very dangerous thing as well. Taking animals in off the streets is risky because the animals could have diseases and you do not know how the animal will react around you and your environment. But you could take them to an animal shelter where they would get proper care. That is how people help homeless animals. In conclusion, this issue is important, not just for the animals, but for the people too. Our solution is to volunteer at an animal shelter to raise awareness, and to help the animals shelters with whatever duties they need. We would take a group of 10 children to go and volunteer at the shelter. At animal shelters they are typically understaffed and overcrowded. The overpopulation in shelters causes the shelters to euthanize the animals. But if we volunteer and help out we can show we want these animals to find homes and that they can support the animals without killing them. We really want to go and volunteer but, to go and volunteer, we need transportation and a group of kids who are willing and happy to go and help out at animal shelters. We also need parent volunteers to transport all 10 of the kids to the animal shelter. We can take the mini-bus if we can get a driver who has a listen every for driving the mini-bus. Our goal in this project is to help raise awareness for homeless animals. We also hope to help alleviate some of the pressures on shelters by volunteering. We will know if we have completed our goal if people start talking about this issue outside of class. We hope that people who talk about this issue will be moved to action by our project and our volunteer work. Bibliography Wake County. “Animal Shelter.” Wakegov.
